Johanna Knorr: "Take advantage of the opportunities 4-H has for you!"

Johanna Knorr is a 4-H alum from West Otter Tail County. She was a member of the Norwegian Grove 4-H Club in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.

Growing up, Johanna was involved in all things dairy. In addition to raising and showing dairy cows for her local county fair, Johanna "exhibited dairy with 4-H at the Minnesota State Fair for 7 years. Aside from the show ring, I enjoyed the interview process at State Fair. It really tested my knowledge of the dairy project," said Johanna.

In high school, she went to the National 4-H Dairy Conference in Madison, Wisconsin as a way to further showcase her knowledge and the cows she raised. "It was an amazing opportunity to meet other 4-H members from across the country who loved dairy cattle as much as I did!"

Johanna is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities majoring in Animal Science, Agriculture, and Food Business Management. She is a member of Beta of Clovia Sorority, the Gopher Dairy Club, University Honors Program, and the College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource Science’s Student Board.

After college, Johanna hopes to work in the dairy industry, and 4-H inspired her to pursue this dream. "My experiences with 4-H were what really inspired me to pursue this future. My first time showing a dairy heifer at the Minnesota State Fair, I fell in love with cattle, the people of the dairy community, and all things related to agriculture. I had grown up on a farm, but I didn’t appreciate agriculture me until I experienced it through 4-H. 4-H also taught me to strive for improvement, accept friendly criticism, stand up for my work, and to explain my ideas to others."

Today, Johanna remains involved with 4-H as a volunteer. She helps at various events during her summers at home. Every day, the 4-H Pledge influences how she lives her life. "It reminds me of the values I learned from my family and friends in 4-H. It has taught me the importance of thinking clearly for myself while also seeking what is best for others."

Johanna encourages every 4-H member to take advantage of the opportunities the program has to offer. "I was able to meet many other people, both professionals and peers, through 4-H. Some of my best friends today are the people who I met at the fair or leadership conferences."

Her other advice to alumni is to give back to the program. "I know that many of my successes are due to others committing their time to my growth. It is never too soon to pay it forward. Teach others, stay humble, and thank those who helped you to achieve."
