Julia Holen: "You don’t even realize you're gaining skills that will be with you for the rest of your life!"

Julia Holen is a junior studying Animal Science and Agronomy at the University of Minnesota –Twin Cities in the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences.  She is our September Minnesota 4-H Featured Alum!

What were your main 4-H project areas? I spent most of my 4-H career in West Otter Tail County focused on the Swine project. I also participated in the Poultry project and did Livestock Demonstrations. From 2012 to 2013 I was a member of the Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors program and was a Minnesota delegate to the National 4-H Congress in 2013.
What is one of your favorite memories from your years in 4-H? In 2010, after 7 years of hard work and dedication, I achieved my dream of getting into the auction with my swine project when I received the last spot in the Purple Ribbon Auction with my Purebred Market Barrow. After countless hours researching genetics, forming different diets, and walking pigs morning and night, all of my hard work was recognized and it felt amaz…

Evy (Krause) Gebhardt: "4-H taught me that each of us has something to give.”

Meet Evy Gebhardt, director of sales & marketing for Outdoor News publications and proud Minnesota 4-H alum!

Evy (born Evelyn Krause) participated in Wright County 4-H from 1972 to 1984. She actively engaged in a variety of project areas including Dairy, Creative Arts, Public Speaking, Horticulture and Cooking. Recalling these projects stir up vivid memories for Evy of “charcoal on paper, oil on canvas, flowers picked when the early morning dew was still heavy, and testing recipes again and again before hand-writing them on note cards.” She also participated in Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) and 4-H Exchanges to Michigan, Tennessee and instate rural/ urban experiences.

“I hope that current and future 4-H’ers will allow the program to broaden their horizons. Through the exchange programs I was privileged to participate in, my world grew. Being exposed to new cultures and views through 4-H was an unexpected benefit that I highly recommend.”

Wadena County 4-H'er Anna Johnson receives Kern Scholarship

Meet Anna Johnson, a graduate of Sebeka High School, 4-H youth from Wadena County and 2015 recipient of the Kern Scholarship from the Minnesota 4-H Foundation.
Anna has been an active member Wadena County 4-H. She’s filled several leadership roles as president, secretary, and treasurer for both her local club and Wadena County and Horse PDC. She is very passionate about the importance of citizenship and leadership experience, and has strived to keep the afterschool 4-H program at Sebeka School available to non-traditional 4-H’ers. She has served as an After School 4-H assistant and instructor since the sixth grade.

“I hope to inspire students to achieve their highest potential and become productive agriculturists. No matter what state I end up in, I plan to continue to volunteer my time with the local 4-H programs and continue to ‘Make the best better’.”
