Featured 4-H Scholar: Katie Petersen

Meet Katie Petersen, a freshman at Bemidji State University, 4-H alum from Roseau County and a 2014 recipient of the Kern Scholarship from the Minnesota 4-H Foundation.

Katie has been an active member of 4-H at both the club and county level. She's filled several leadership roles in the Malung 4-H Club including president, vice president, treasurer, and historian. For Roseau County 4-H, she has served on the Leader's Council and supported committee activities in the areas of livestock, the county fair food stand, and fashion revue.

During Katie's 13 years in 4-H, she has participated in 15 unique projects including sheep, performing arts, fashion revue, quilting and photography. She has received numerous awards for her ewes and lambs, including a 2008 Grand Championship and 2013 Reserve Championship for her White and Speckled Ewe Lamb at the Minnesota State Fair. Katie has also earned four Grand Championships for her lambs and ewes at the Roseau County Fair.

"Having the opportunity to raise and show sheep at the county and state levels has taught me great responsibilities. Showing with and against my sisters has been one of my best memories of 4-H."

Katie, the middle of five children, is passionate about family engagement in the education of children in rural communities. Her own learning experiences inform that passion.

"If my parents had not pushed for early evaluation and support when I was a young learner, I would not have achieved and learned what I did during my school years."

Katie is putting action to her passion by pursuing an undergraduate degree in early childhood education. She hopes to return to her home community to teach and empower local families to fully engage in their children's learning.

Congratulations to Katie Petersen for winning the Kern Scholarship!
